A Russian national identified as a glamorous escort has been charged with the assassination of a high-ranking Ukrainian defector, who was killed by a bomb planted in a trash can. Margarita Reut, 32, was arrested in Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea following the blast that killed Robert Shageev, a 49-year-old former officer in the Russian Black Sea Fleet who was wanted by Ukraine for high treason.

Reports indicate that the explosive device was detonated on Thursday as Shageev walked past the trash bin. Reut was apprehended shortly after the incident and has reportedly confessed to the assassination. She faces a terrorism charge resulting in death, according to Russian news outlet E2W News. Sources cited by The Telegraph suggest Reut showed no remorse and had planned to flee the country after the killing.

Shageev had previously served as the acting commander of the Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's only submarine, before defecting to Russia in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea. He was accused of joining Russia's military efforts in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with his former fleet allegedly involved in submarine-launched missile attacks.

Reut, who reportedly worked as a biologist producing floral-infused vaginal suppositories and appeared on escort websites, was born in Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow. She had also lived in Sochi and frequently visited Crimea. The details of how or when she allegedly became involved with Ukrainian intelligence remain unclear.

This is not Reut's first encounter with Russian authorities. She was previously arrested in July 2025 for shouting anti-Russian sentiments on a public train after news broke of a Ukrainian drone attack. She was detained for two days for resisting arrest and fined for allegedly "discrediting" the Russian military. If convicted in the bombing case, Reut could face up to 30 years in prison.
