A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other dignitaries had departed the Yahodyn station, according to Ukraine's state rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia.
The diplomatic train, which also carried former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and security advisers from several European Union states, had reportedly left the station ahead of schedule. The visitors were returning from a security conference in Kyiv.
Ukrzaliznytsia stated on Telegram that it is "highly probable" the drone's intended target was the diplomatic train. Carl Bildt shared a video on X of the attack, noting that the targeted train was the one that had been at the station minutes after his own. He added that the train was evacuated as the drone approached and that no one was harmed, crediting a "very good safety system."
Another train, carrying former CIA Director David Petraeus, was at the Yahodyn station when the drone strike occurred, Ukrzaliznytsia reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties from any of the trains.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson commented on X, calling the attack "random and senseless," and stating it was the "kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring every day - even on civilian railways."
Earlier on Sunday, a Russian drone reportedly hit a truck less than a mile from Polish territory, leading to the temporary closure of the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing. Ukrzaliznytsia indicated that it "constantly adjusts train schedules" to mitigate the risk of such attacks.
