Russian drones targeted Ukraine's southern city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday, hours after Ukrainian forces launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia. The intensified aerial attacks underscore the lack of significant progress in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which began more than four years ago when Russia invaded its neighbor.

The Russian bombardment of Zaporizhzhia damaged apartment blocks, a university, and a shopping mall, wounding five people, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia also struck nine other regions of Ukraine, he stated.

"Russia is not backing down from its escalation and is sending many signals that it is ready to expand the war," Zelenskyy said, adding that discussions at the upcoming U.N. General Assembly would focus on achieving peace through joint efforts. Russian President Vladimir Putin is not expected to attend the assembly.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses downed 244 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black Sea waters overnight. Concurrently, Ukraine's air force reported shooting down or suppressing 148 Russian drones during an overnight attack.

These exchanges occurred as voters in Russia participated in the final day of a parliamentary election. Ukrainian drone attacks, some targeting Moscow, have become more frequent. In recent weeks, drones have repeatedly strayed into the airspace of neighboring countries, causing concern among leaders wary of Russia's intentions.

Moldova's Ministry of Defense reported a temporary closure of airspace in the northern part of the country after an "aerial object" entered its national airspace shortly after midnight. Moldova has experienced multiple airspace violations and found drone debris on its territory, with officials often attributing blame to Moscow. Pro-Western Moldovan President Maia Sandu has condemned Russia's actions, stating that the war is now reaching Moldova's border.

Drone incursions into Romania's airspace have also increased significantly.
