At least two people were killed and ten others injured after Russia launched drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv early Tuesday, officials reported. The assault marked a resumption of airstrikes on the capital after a three-day pause that coincided with the visit of U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Explosions were heard across Kyiv overnight, with residential buildings among the structures hit. A five-story apartment block in the Solomianskyi district sustained damage, and vehicles caught fire in the Podilskyi district. Residents sought shelter in a metro station during the attack, a routine practice during the ongoing conflict.
The strikes occurred after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Witkoff and Kushner on Monday. Zelensky stated he expected the war to continue into the winter following the talks, which were the first visit by the U.S. representatives to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion. The discussions concluded without major breakthroughs, though Zelensky indicated that officials from Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S. would meet in the near future to continue discussions. He also proposed a trilateral meeting involving Russia and the U.S.
Meanwhile, buildings in the Russian city of Saratov were struck during a Ukrainian drone attack early Tuesday, according to regional governor Roman Busargin. Air raid alerts have become more frequent in Kyiv, with BBC Verify analysis indicating the city is experiencing more daily alerts than at any point since February 2022.
