A Russian warship armed with nuclear-capable hypersonic missiles has been spotted near a German tourist island, marking a potential escalation in tensions between Russia and NATO. The frigate Admiral Kasatonov was observed close to Fehmarn, an island in the Baltic Sea.

This deployment comes as Russian officials have issued warnings against Western actions. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that Moscow would retaliate against any seizure of its vessels, describing such actions as "piracy and robbery." Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's national security council, has also threatened attacks on European ships suspected of transporting cargo for "enemy states."

The Admiral Kasatonov, commissioned in 2020, is described as one of the Russian navy's advanced vessels, capable of long-range strikes and submarine warfare. Its presence in the Baltic Sea follows the redeployment of another Russian warship, the Admiral Levchenko, to the same area.

Recent weeks have seen increased scrutiny of Russian maritime activities. In June, British forces intercepted and boarded the tanker Smyrtos off the coast of Dorset on suspicion of violating international sanctions. The operation, praised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was part of a broader effort by the UK and its partners to disrupt Russia's "shadow fleet," which officials claim is crucial for funding Moscow's war effort in Ukraine.

An unspecified U.S. intelligence report has also warned of potential Russian attacks on Western allies in the coming weeks, possibly targeting Poland or a Baltic state. The report suggests such actions could be intended to test NATO's resolve.

The Russian "shadow fleet," comprising over 700 vessels, has been operating since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. UK officials have stated that these vessels are responsible for carrying a significant portion of Russia's sanctioned oil, thereby providing financial support for the conflict.
