The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has issued an urgent appeal for teddy bears and other soft toys to comfort orphaned kittens at its Birmingham Animal Centre. The shelter, located on Newbrook Farm in Frankley Green, is currently caring for 113 cats, including 11 kittens that require constant attention.
These young animals were discovered without their mothers and can become unsettled by the loss of maternal warmth and reassurance. According to the RSPCA, cuddly toys can help these vulnerable kittens feel more secure, especially during sleep, and aid in their development. The donated toys will remain with the kittens even after they are adopted into new homes.
Holistic cat expert Katie Gwilt, founder of The Kat Lady, explained that a small, soft teddy can offer a comforting presence for orphaned kittens, reducing feelings of exposure and loneliness. "While a cuddly toy cannot replace their mum, it can provide a valuable sense of security during a very vulnerable stage of their development," Gwilt stated.
Of the 113 cats at the shelter, 51 are housed on-site, with an additional 62 being cared for by foster families. Among the kittens receiving intensive care are sisters Rose and Pearl, who were found without their mother.
Emma Finnimore, the fostering and volunteer coordinator at the Birmingham Animal Centre, expressed gratitude for potential donations. "We'd be really grateful if anyone who lives locally could drop by with donations of small, soft and cuddly toys and teddies that are washable so we can use them for our little kittens," Finnimore said. "Every teddy means another little kitten has someone soft and comforting to snuggle up to, so please help us give our babies some extra cuddles."
Those wishing to donate are asked to provide small, soft, and washable toys to the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre on Newbrook Farm in Frankley Green.
