Rosie O'Donnell offered a glimpse into her ongoing reconnection with her daughter, Chelsea, who is currently incarcerated. The comedian shared a text message exchange on Instagram Thursday, showing the two discussing Chelsea's impending release from prison.
In the messages, Chelsea informed her mother that she had retrieved her music and was coordinating with a social worker for her release plans. O'Donnell responded by mentioning she had gotten her nails done and inquired about Chelsea's reading material. Chelsea indicated she was enjoying the "The Legacy" book series.
This exchange follows a significant reunion between mother and daughter in June, when O'Donnell visited Chelsea in jail. O'Donnell described the visit as their first substantive conversation in 10 years, lasting over 25 minutes. During the four-hour prison visit, Chelsea reportedly cried when the meeting was cut short due to a tornado warning. O'Donnell remarked that it was the first time she had witnessed an empathetic emotion from her daughter, expressing hope for a brighter future for Chelsea.
Chelsea, 28, has faced legal troubles, including charges in February 2025 for felony bail jumping, resisting an officer, and possession of methamphetamine and child neglect. She was initially sentenced to six years of probation with a warning of imprisonment for any violations, specifically concerning controlled substances. Her probation was later revoked, leading to her jail sentence last October. In February, reports indicated Chelsea was accused of assault after allegedly touching a man's genitals without permission, a claim she denied.
O'Donnell adopted Chelsea in 1997. The mother-daughter relationship has been estranged for much of Chelsea's adult life. O'Donnell has previously spoken about Chelsea being born with drug withdrawal symptoms due to her birth mother's substance use during pregnancy, acknowledging that her initial belief that love could solve everything might not be entirely accurate.
O'Donnell has four other adopted children: Parker, 31; Blake, 26; Vivi, 23; and Clay, 13.
