Country singer Rory Feek has revealed that his youngest daughter, Indiana, was airlifted to a hospital following a sudden and severe health scare. The incident occurred just two weeks after the 12-year-old underwent open-heart surgery.
Feek described in a Substack post how what began as a headache and cough for Indiana quickly escalated into a life-threatening emergency. Indiana, who was born with a ventricular septal defect, a congenital heart defect, collapsed after experiencing what Feek initially mistook for a stomach bug. The situation became dire enough that Feek and his wife, Rebecca, called 911, fearing they might lose their daughter.
Indiana was first taken to a hospital in Waco, Texas, but doctors determined she required specialized care in Austin. She was transported by helicopter while Feek followed in his truck. At Dell Children’s Medical Center, physicians discovered a dangerous buildup of fluid surrounding Indiana’s heart, which was impeding its ability to pump effectively. This condition necessitated emergency surgery.
Feek explained that the fluid buildup was a complication that can sometimes occur following heart surgery due to inflammation, leading to the heart struggling to pump and causing a lack of oxygen and vomiting. Doctors removed 610 cc of fluid from around her heart, noting that the swelling had increased to approximately twice its normal size.
The surgery brought immediate relief, and doctors have indicated that Indiana is recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery. The incident comes shortly after Indiana was released from the hospital on July 3, following her initial corrective heart surgery for complications related to her congenital defect. Feek had expressed gratitude for her successful initial recovery at that time.
Indiana, who has Down syndrome, has a history of heart issues, as approximately half of babies born with Down syndrome experience some form of congenital heart condition. Feek had previously documented their journey through the initial surgery, acknowledging the emotional toll while expressing thankfulness for her recovery.
