England captain Joe Root believes the Test cricket team is in a better position now than at the beginning of a turbulent summer, citing the squad's improved maturity and professionalism.

Root, who regained the captaincy for a second time in June amid significant team changes, highlighted the players' understanding of expectations both on and off the field. "There's been a lot of chaos around this series before a ball was bowled and the way we've handled it on and off the field, the way everyone understands what is expected of them - both as a player and how we want to carry ourselves - is a really good thing," Root said.

The summer was marked by several incidents, including the absence of all-rounder Ben Stokes and an off-field issue involving bowler Brydon Carse. Despite these challenges, Root feels the team has displayed a more mature and adaptable approach.

Players like Dan Lawrence, who stepped in for Stokes, and Jordan Cox have shown promise, as has the pace attack, though they struggled against Pakistan's lower order in a recent match. Root emphasized that development off the field is paramount. "We're not the finished article," Root told BBC Test Match Special. "We're not going to kid ourselves. That'll be a constant work [in progress]. The culture of this team is not something that's going to happen overnight, it's something we're going to have to live and breathe day in, day out."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan echoed Root's sentiment that the team is a "work in progress." He noted the significant talent within the squad, mentioning Harry Brook as a "generational talent" and praising the performances of Lawrence, Cox, and Jamie Smith. However, Vaughan also pointed out that the team's success will ultimately be judged on their ability to win series, referencing their last five-Test series victory in 2017.

Root added that the current group of players are committed to their work and aiming to earn the trust and respect of their supporters through their performances and conduct. The team's goal of a 3-0 series win was achieved, demonstrating their clinical execution in matches.
