England football legend Roger Hunt's white long-sleeve number 21 jersey from the 1966 World Cup has sold at auction for £11,000. The shirt was worn by the striker during a group match against France on July 20, 1966, where he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory.
Hunt was a key member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad, playing in every game of the tournament and scoring three goals to help the team advance from the group stages. England ultimately secured the World Cup title by defeating West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium.
The signed shirt was sold at Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire. Including auctioneer costs, the final sale price exceeded £14,000. Andrew Aldridge, the auctioneer, noted that the shirt represents a tangible connection to England's last World Cup victory.
Hunt earned 34 caps for England, scoring 18 international goals. He spent the majority of his professional career with Liverpool, where he was the club's top scorer with 285 goals until being surpassed by Ian Rush in 1992.
This is not the first time a jersey from England's 1966 World Cup campaign has achieved a significant sum at auction. In 2023, Sir Bobby Charlton's England shirt sold for £45,000. Charlton's shirt was worn during a semi-final match against Portugal, where he scored two goals to secure a 2-1 victory and England's place in the World Cup final.
