Lachie Perrem, a 25-year-old Australian tradesman, is nearing his discharge from the hospital five months after a robot vacuum cleaner exploded in his home, causing extensive burns. Perrem suffered burns to 75 percent of his body following the incident on July 2 in Brabham, Perth.

His mother, Fiona Perrem, provided an update on his recovery via his GoFundMe page, stating that if all continues to progress well, Lachie could be released by September 9. He has undergone multiple surgeries, including skin grafting for his legs and has shown significant progress in his hand recovery, with even small movements marking major milestones. His fiancée, Bri Thompson, has adopted a kitten to keep him company upon his return home.

Incident and Investigation

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a faulty battery in the robot vacuum. Fiona Perrem explained that the battery may have had a leak, and an ignition source while Lachie was cooking triggered the blast. The device has been sent to Western Australia's building and energy office for further investigation. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services Western Australia noted that lithium-ion batteries, common in such devices, contain flammable materials that can lead to thermal runaway, characterized by violent bursts, toxic gas release, and intense fires. Such incidents involving lithium-ion batteries, particularly in e-scooters and e-bikes, have become more frequent.

Battery Safety and Risk Mitigation

Dr. Adam Best, a battery technology expert at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, explained that an ignition source can cause gases released during thermal runaway to ignite and potentially explode. He stated that lithium-ion batteries can fail due to charger or electronic faults, physical damage, exposure to heat, or, in rare instances, manufacturing defects. These batteries are widely used in various devices, including electric vehicles, phones, laptops, and power tools. To mitigate risks, consumers are advised to purchase from reputable manufacturers, regularly inspect charging cables for damage, replace faulty ones, charge devices on non-flammable surfaces, avoid leaving them plugged in for extended periods, and never charge a hot, swollen, or misshapen battery.

Ongoing Recovery and Community Support

Perrem's recovery has included surgeries for dead tissue removal and skin grafts on his fingers, left elbow, and torso. He also temporarily lost his voice. A GoFundMe fundraiser for his recovery has raised over $47,000 towards its $55,000 goal. Images from the aftermath show significant damage to his home, with blown-out windows, blackened walls, destroyed furniture, and scattered debris. Perrem was known for his work in mental health advocacy through his charity, The Tradie Vault, which aimed to build a supportive community for men's mental health.
