Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., has sent a letter to Fuyao Glass Industry Group Co., a major Chinese automotive glass manufacturer with U.S. operations, seeking extensive documentation about its business practices, financial ties, and alleged labor and immigration law violations.

Khanna, the top Democrat on the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party, cited allegations that Fuyao has been undercutting U.S. manufacturers through alleged subsidies from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and by employing undocumented workers, some of whom are allegedly smuggled into the country.

"They have serious allegations against them of suppressing prices because they're being subsidized by the Chinese Communist Party, allegedly, of bringing people into this country who are undocumented and violating our immigration laws, and then exploiting those workers and having them work long hours with little pay," Khanna told Fox News Digital.

Federal Investigation and Seizure

A 2024 federal raid on Fuyao's properties in Ohio resulted in the civil asset forfeiture of $126 million, including luxury goods, vehicles, and 12 properties described by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) as "boarding houses" for migrant workers. The DOJ stated that many of these workers were allegedly smuggled into the U.S. and transported to Fuyao factories, living in company-provided housing and transportation.

A criminal investigation into Fuyao by the DOJ is ongoing, according to a 2025 press release.

Khanna's Demands

Khanna's letter requests data on potential CCP subsidies, the involvement of CCP officials in Fuyao's operations and board, and whether the company provides reports to the CCP. He specifically asked about the company's opposition to unionization efforts in the U.S. and any alleged retaliation against whistleblowers.

"What is Fuyao’s reasoning for its opposition to unionization efforts at facilities in the United States?" Khanna's letter reads. "Has Fuyao retaliated against any whistleblower... including but not limited to through actions impacting employment, hours, pay, employment records, or other workplace decisions?"

Fuyao Glass, a global leader in automotive glass manufacturing, supplies to major automakers such as BMW, Volkswagen, General Motors, and Ford. The company claims to hold a significant portion of the global automotive glass market share.

Khanna has also requested an on-site visit to Fuyao's Ohio plant before November 1 to observe working conditions and assess the labor force.

Bipartisan Concerns

Khanna stated he expects the inquiry to be bipartisan, noting a good working relationship with committee Chairman Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich. He expressed a shared commitment to American industrial policy and concerns about Chinese companies operating in the U.S. if they do not adhere to trade, labor, and immigration laws.

While acknowledging former President Donald Trump's role in raising awareness about U.S.-China economic disparities, Khanna criticized Trump's overall policy, giving it a 'C' grade. He argued for greater domestic investment in U.S. industries and more aggressive action against companies like Fuyao that allegedly violate U.S. laws.

Fuyao was the subject of the 2019 Netflix documentary "American Factory," which depicted the company's acquisition of a former General Motors plant in Ohio and its efforts to counter local unionization drives.

Fuyao and the DOJ have been contacted for comment.
