Reform UK Chairman Lee Anderson has formally requested a public apology from LBC presenter James O'Brien for what he described as "distressing" and "dehumanizing" comments made about Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. Anderson claims O'Brien's remarks, made during his radio show on Monday, violate the Broadcasting Code concerning hate speech.
During the broadcast, O'Brien addressed claims made by Farage regarding personal security and alleged attacks. O'Brien dismissed some of these claims, referencing past incidents such as alleged tampering with wheel nuts and a supposed firebombing of a house. He also made highly personal attacks, calling Farage "a horrible excretion… bobbing around in the toilet bowl of public life" and "the unflushable poo, he is the irremovable skid mark on the Y-fronts of British politics."
Anderson, in a letter to LBC and its owner Global, stated that O'Brien's language constituted a clear breach of broadcasting rules. He argued that dehumanizing Farage with such terms, coupled with dismissiveness towards his safety concerns, created "very distressing listening."
Reform UK is urging LBC to instruct O'Brien to issue a public apology and to issue him a warning regarding broadcasting standards. The party has indicated that if these demands are not met, they intend to file an official complaint with Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, by the following Monday. Global has been approached for comment.
