The Boston Red Sox have acquired All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles in a significant trade deadline move, bolstering their lineup as they contend for a playoff spot. The deal was confirmed Tuesday, with reports of the teams working on an agreement surfacing earlier in the week.

Rutschman, a switch-hitting catcher, brings an immediate impact bat to a surging Red Sox team that currently holds a 60-51 record and is fighting to maintain its position in the playoff picture.

The 28-year-old Rutschman is batting .251 with a .764 OPS over 67 games in his fifth major league season. He has recorded eight home runs and 47 RBIs this year. Beyond his offensive contributions, Rutschman is also recognized for his defensive prowess. In 2026, he ranks in the 100th percentile in caught-stealing above average, the 96th percentile in fielding run value, and the 93rd percentile in framing.

He is expected to upgrade the catcher position, where Boston has seen production from Carlos Narváez (.535 OPS) and Connor Wong (.707 OPS). It remains to be seen if Rutschman will immediately take over as the primary catcher.

Rutschman, the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, has been managing a wrist inflammation issue that led to him being placed on the 10-day injured list on July 19. He was eligible to return on July 29 but has not yet rejoined the team.

The Orioles, who have depth at the catcher position, traded Rutschman while his value is reportedly at a recent high, attributed in part to a strong season. Baltimore will now rely on rookie sensation Samuel Basallo, who is signed to an eight-year, $67 million contract.

In another move within the American League East, the Tampa Bay Rays also strengthened their catching situation by acquiring Liam Hicks from the Miami Marlins. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Twins, opting to be buyers at the deadline, appear set to keep Ryan Jeffers, and acquiring Hunter Goodman from Colorado would have required a substantial package.
