A massive bluefin tuna, estimated to weigh around 500 pounds and measuring 446 pounds after being gilled and gutted, was caught off the coast of San Diego this week. This catch is considered the largest bluefin tuna ever landed using a rod and reel, according to Markus Medak of Shearwater Fishing, who made the record-breaking catch with an unnamed fishing partner.
The prized catch was brought to Tunaville Market and Grocery in Point Loma, which supplies local restaurants. Tommy Gomes, owner of the market, stated that while the fish was commercially caught, it would have set a new state record in California if caught during sportfishing. Gomes highlighted the economic benefit of such catches for the local community, contrasting it with goods flown in from elsewhere.
The tuna is scheduled for a public demonstration and filleting at Herb and Wood restaurant on Thursday evening, where it will be served. A representative for the restaurant indicated that all parts of the fish would be utilized, including its spinal fluid, which is considered a delicacy in some cultures.
According to Gomes, the current "Super El Niño" conditions are contributing to an increase in exotic marine life along California's coast. He also mentioned that the tuna's head will be given to a local scientist for an origin study. Gomes encouraged local residents to experience fishing, remarking, "The world needs more tackle boxes and less Xboxes."
