BBC Radio 1 has announced a significant schedule shake-up, which includes the departure of six long-time presenters, with social media influencers and new talent stepping in to fill their roles. The changes are set to take effect at the end of August.
Among the presenters leaving are Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom, Dean McCullough, Nat O'Leary, James Cusack, and Swarzy. The BBC stated in an Instagram post that it thanks the departing presenters for their "passion, creativity and dedication" and wishes them well for the future.
Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom will depart after seven and five years respectively, having hosted the mid-morning Live Lounge slot with co-presenter Charlie Hedges. Hedges will remain at Radio 1 and will now host the Live Lounge show with Jeremiah Asiamah. Early Breakfast host Dean McCullough is also leaving his show, with the award-winning duo Mylo & Rosie taking over. McCullough had been with Radio 1 for six years, starting as a stand-in presenter before moving to various weekend and weekday slots.
New presenters joining the station include internet personality and podcaster GK Barry, and influencer Charley Marlowe. GK Barry, 26, will host a series of programmes beginning with a six-week run starting September 10. "I am really excited to be back hosting a series of my own BBC Radio 1 shows from this September," GK Barry said. "You'll be hearing my favourite songs, we'll be speaking with some really exciting guests and as always, in true GK Barry style, I promise a lot of humour, chaos and embarrassing stories along the way!"
Vicky Hawkesworth will be joined by Charley Marlowe for a show airing Fridays to Sundays, while Emil Franchi is named as the new presenter of Weekend Breakfast.
Lauren Layfield will host The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham on Sundays, marking the first time this program will broadcast live from the city. Other new additions to the schedule include Shanequa Paris and Oré Olukoga on Life Hacks, Sian Eleri's Chillest Show, and Alyx Holcombe's Indie Show moving to Tuesdays.
Melvin Odoom shared his gratitude on Instagram, calling his time at Radio 1 a "dream" and thanking producers and listeners. Rickie Haywood-Williams echoed these sentiments, expressing pride in his journey with the station. Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, welcomed the new talent, highlighting the energy and chemistry Jeremiah Asiamah and Charlie Hedges will bring to the Live Lounge, and the humor and personality GK Barry and Charley Marlowe will add to their new programs. Jones also noted the unique broadcast from Birmingham for The Official Chart: First Look and the suitability of Mylo & Rosie and Emil Franchi for their respective shows.
