A coalition of over 150 public figures, including astronaut Tim Peake and musician Johnny Marr, have signed an open letter advocating for financial support for the Jodrell Bank Observatory. The signatories, who have a history of connection with the observatory through concerts and broadcasts, described Jodrell Bank as "an icon in UK cultural and scientific history."

The letter emphasizes the observatory's role as a "thriving, thumping heart of space observation, research and education in the UK." It highlights the institution's current ambitions and future plans, stating that it will ensure the UK's continued relevance and leadership in space exploration. Jodrell Bank is currently the headquarters for the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, the largest astronomical project globally. The letter posits that the observatory could play a vital role in international safety by tracking space debris, solar flares, satellites, and asteroids.

Furthermore, the letter points to Jodrell Bank's educational impact, noting that it hosts over 25,000 schoolchildren annually, serving as "the birthplace of future UK science pioneers." The signatories framed the required investment as a cost-effective opportunity, suggesting that an annual expenditure of approximately £2.8 million would yield significant national and global benefits.

The signatories include electronica pioneer Ralf Hütter of Kraftwerk, and the bands New Order, Elbow, and Doves, as well as comedian Dara Ó Briain and poet laureate Simon Armitage. Their collective appeal underscores the multifaceted value of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, spanning cultural heritage, scientific advancement, and educational outreach.
