Pub's New 24-Hour Launderette Sparks Noise and Parking Complaints

A pub in Norwich has faced a wave of complaints from neighbors regarding its newly installed 24-hour launderette, prompting a commitment from the owners to adjust its operating hours and lighting.

The Woodman pub established the self-service facility to supplement income, citing financial pressures from increased National Insurance contributions and minimum wage.

However, residents living near the establishment reported disturbances from the constant noise of the machines and bright lights, which they described as intrusive and causing light pollution. The launderette, equipped with two industrial washing machines and a large dryer, also led to parking issues, with customers reportedly parking on pavements, forcing pedestrians into the road.

Pippa Lain-Smith, a resident living opposite the pub, told the Eastern Daily Press that the launderette was an "eyesore" and not in keeping with the area. She suggested the facility would have been better located in the pub's car park, further from homes.

Another neighbor described the parking situation as "ridiculous" and "an accident waiting to happen."

In response to the resident concerns, the pub owners have agreed to limit the launderette's operating hours to between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The lighting will also be put on a timer to avoid running through the night. Additionally, customers will now receive one hour of free parking in the pub's car park.

Antony Little, the local county councillor, acknowledged the financial struggles faced by pubs and the need for diversification but stressed that this should not come at the expense of the community. He indicated that while the machines could remain, measures should be taken to ensure residents' homes are not negatively impacted. Little also expressed surprise that the facility did not require prior permission or neighbor consultation.

A parish meeting was scheduled to further discuss the residents' concerns.
