Dr. Avram Mack, a psychiatrist who testified that Lindsay Clancy is criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children, resigned from his position at Nemours Children's Health on Monday, August 24. Mack had testified that Clancy, 36, strangled her children Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, with exercise bands on January 24, 2023, telling each child to "Go to God."
Mack's resignation came hours after his cross-examination concluded on Monday. He had been hired by the prosecution to interview Clancy, who is being held at Tewksbury Hospital pending a verdict. Mack determined that Clancy experienced a "major depressive episode" but did not suffer from psychosis, and he observed no signs of mania.
During his two-day cross-examination via Zoom, Mack repeatedly clashed with Clancy's defense attorney, Kevin Reddington. Reddington questioned Mack's experience with postpartum issues and women's mental health, at one point asking if the psychiatrist was fabricating his testimony. The defense attorney also challenged Mack on potential confirmatory bias and his earnings as an expert witness.
The exchanges grew heated, particularly when discussing postpartum psychosis, which Mack referred to as a "proposed" symptom or disease. Judge William Sullivan intervened at one point, instructing Mack to directly answer Reddington's questions. "Doctor, hold on. Here's the way this works. You don't really ask a lot of questions, you answer the questions," Sullivan told Mack.
Clancy has admitted to killing her children but has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis. Her defense is seeking her commitment to a state mental health facility rather than a prison sentence. The jury began deliberations on Thursday. The source of the information is the Daily Mail.
