Princess Cruises is implementing stricter booking policies, including higher deposits and an earlier final payment deadline for new bookings on sailings departing in 2027 and beyond. The changes, set to take effect September 2, have sparked mixed reactions among travelers, with some criticizing the increased financial requirements and tighter timelines.
Under the new policy, guests booking standard seven-day cruises in inside, oceanview, balcony, and mini-suite staterooms will now pay a $300 per person deposit, an increase from the previous $250. Deposits for suite accommodations will rise from $500 to $600 per person. The cruise line stated these adjustments aim to bring consistency to the booking process, align with industry practices, and ensure fair access to staterooms and desired sailings.
The most significant change is the shift to a 120-day final payment deadline, a modification from previous terms. Princess Cruises noted that reservations will be automatically canceled if final payment is not received by the deadline, although guests will continue to receive payment reminders. These new rules apply to new bookings for sailings departing January 1, 2027, or later.
Social media platforms have become a hub for debate among cruise enthusiasts regarding the policy updates. Some travelers expressed that the earlier deadlines and higher deposits would not impact their booking habits, as they typically pay for their cruises in full soon after booking. One commenter on TikTok stated, "I pay it all as soon as I book. I get my reservations in that day, and I’m always sail ready." Another echoed this sentiment, saying, "I don’t mind these changes because I like to pay off my trips as fast as I can so that I’m able to begin saving for the next one."
However, a segment of travelers voiced concerns about the increased financial commitment. "Those deposits are crazy," one commenter wrote. Others pointed out potential difficulties for those who rely on payment plans, with one user stating, "120 days out for final payment is the worst of all of it! Especially people who are on payment plans."
Princess Cruises' revised policies come at a time when other cruise lines have also introduced changes that have drawn criticism. For instance, Celebrity Cruises faced backlash after raising its automatic gratuity charges with little prior notice. The daily gratuities increased by $1.50 per person across all stateroom categories, bringing the charges to between $19.50 and $24.50 per guest per day. Many passengers expressed frustration with the timing of this announcement, noting they were informed on the same day the higher rates became effective.
The cruise line has stated that these booking changes are intended to streamline the process and ensure a smoother experience for guests. Passengers relax by the pool aboard the Princess Cruises ship, Enchanted Princess, under a bright sky.
