A recent poll reveals that Democrats now hold a considerably more favorable view of socialism than capitalism. The survey, conducted by CBS News and YouGov, found that nearly 60% of Democrats support socialism, while only 18% view it negatively. Conversely, just 32% of Democrats have a positive outlook on capitalism, with 50% holding a negative view.
These findings are particularly pronounced among Democrats with a college degree, where 71% favor socialism compared to 16% who view it unfavorably. The poll's results emerge amid internal party discussions described as a "battle for the soul" of the Democratic Party.
Candidates supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have seen success in Democratic primaries across the country during the 2026 election cycle. These victories have primarily occurred in liberal strongholds, but DSA leaders have stated their intention to influence the Democratic Party and steer it further left.
However, the poll suggests the broader American public remains unconvinced that socialism is superior to capitalism. Among the general population, capitalism garners a 46% positive rating against 35% negative. Socialism, in contrast, is viewed positively by 35% and negatively by 42%.
The concept of a free market received strong approval from 66% of all respondents, with 34% deeming it detrimental to the U.S. economy.
Despite the general public's leanings, some policies historically associated with socialism have garnered bipartisan support. For instance, price controls, typically opposed by economists who argue they can disrupt supply and demand leading to shortages, were favored by a significant majority in the poll. Seventy-five percent of Democrats, 62% of Independents, and 54% of Republicans approved of the idea of price controls.
In the political arena, former President Trump has sought to characterize progressive policies and candidates as communist, urging Republicans to highlight these progressive stances as the midterm elections approach. He warned of a "resurgence of the communist menace in our land," linking it to individuals embracing ideas contrary to the nation's way of life.
