Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a dispersal order at the popular Cornish holiday destination of Polzeath beach, following disruptive behavior by hundreds of private school pupils. The order, implemented due to excessive alcohol consumption, public intoxication, and anti-social incidents, was put in place on July 8 and was initially set to expire on July 10, with authorities indicating it could be extended.
According to residents and local reports, large groups of teenagers, believed to be from nearby private schools, have been gathering on the beach for end-of-term celebrations. Incidents described include the smashing of glasses, public sexual acts, and extensive littering. The behavior has led to complaints from residents and holidaymakers who have expressed concern over public safety and the state of the beach.
Beach ranger Andy Stewart, a former police officer, reportedly faced hostility on Tuesday night when he asked a group of youths to leave the area. This confrontation escalated the police response, leading to the dispersal order, which grants officers the power to move individuals along and prevent them from returning to a specific area for a set period.
Inspector Adam Stonehill of Devon and Cornwall Police stated that while the majority of young people behaving respectfully are not a problem, the actions of a few have negatively impacted the community. He emphasized that the police presence has been increased due to the annual influx of holidaymakers and the subsequent rise in evening anti-social behavior, directly linked to these beach gatherings.
Local businesses have also reported issues. Guy Taylor, co-owner of Surfside rum bar and restaurant, noted that he spends a significant amount on security during the early July period due to past incidents involving theft and vandalism by teenagers. He expressed concern about young people being left unsupervised with alcohol in a potentially dangerous environment like the beach.
Polzeath is a well-known holiday spot that attracts visitors including celebrities and former Prime Ministers. The recent events have drawn attention to the challenges faced by local authorities and residents in managing large gatherings during peak tourist seasons.
