Piers Morgan has reignited his public dispute with former Good Morning Britain weatherman Alex Beresford, stating he would "cross continents to avoid him." The remarks come five years after a dramatic on-air exchange between the two presenters that ultimately led to Morgan's departure from the ITV breakfast show.
During an appearance on his YouTube show, "Piers Morgan Uncensored," Morgan discussed his time at GMB. "You become part of a family. I see all my old – well, nearly all my old – Good Morning Britain colleagues," he said, before adding a jab at Beresford. "I don't see the weather guy very often. I would cross continents to avoid him. But the others, I do still see a lot of. You do become very close, actually."
The original clash occurred in 2021 when Beresford confronted Morgan about his views on Meghan Markle. Beresford accused Morgan of "trashing" Markle, stating that Morgan had a personal relationship with her and that she had cut him off. Morgan's response was to storm off the GMB set.
The following day, Morgan resigned from the program. He later discussed the incident with Tucker Carlson, suggesting that his co-host Susanna Reid may have apologized for his behavior out of fear of a public backlash. Morgan also expressed skepticism regarding claims that Markle had faced racist coverage from the British press, arguing that coverage leading up to her wedding to Prince Harry was overwhelmingly positive.
"This narrative from the start that she was bombarded with horrible, hateful, racist press coverage is another disingenuous load of nonsense," Morgan told Carlson, asserting that he, as a former British tabloid editor, would have been aware of any such racist reporting. He suggested that any such claims were fueled by the Oprah Winfrey interview and that many of the headlines cited were American, not British, or had been deliberately edited.
Morgan also criticized Meghan and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey, calling it "tacky, tasteless, disingenuous, and I'm afraid, I believe, in some cases, downright lying on a global scale." He accused the couple of "complete hypocrisy" and of orchestrating a "smear, hit job" on the royal family. Morgan characterized Meghan as a "delusional duchess who is on the make" and criticized their commercial ventures, suggesting they were exploiting Prince Harry's royal title.
Morgan stated that he had received significant public support following his departure from GMB, with people approaching him to express agreement with his comments or to defend his right to free speech. He also mentioned receiving numerous job offers since leaving the ITV show.
