Pierce Brosnan and his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, are preparing to sell their expansive $100 million Malibu compound after more than two decades, citing a growing unease with the risks associated with living in a seismically active, fire-prone coastal area.
Brosnan, 73, expressed his decision to move, stating that the property, which has narrowly avoided wildfires multiple times, has become a source of increasing concern. "We've been spared by the fires a few times now. But I think it's time to move," Brosnan told The Times. "Everything changes, everything falls apart."
The actor highlighted the psychological toll of residing in an area vulnerable to both earthquakes and wildfires. "We live by this body of earth's water on a fault in a ring of earthquakes. That creates a fear," he said. His fears are not unfounded, as Malibu has experienced devastating wildfires, including the catastrophic Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025 that destroyed the homes of other celebrities. Brosnan's own property experienced a $1 million fire in its garage in 2015 while his family was present.
Recent geological events in the exclusive Malibu enclave have further amplified concerns. A significant sinkhole, estimated to be 25 to 30 feet deep and roughly 30 by 60 feet wide, recently collapsed a private beachfront road known as Sea Level Drive, forcing evacuations and leaving properties, including Nicolas Cage's mansion, alarmingly close to the crater. City Manager Joseph Irvin noted that this event may not be isolated for Malibu.
Beyond natural disaster concerns, Brosnan acknowledged the considerable financial commitment required to maintain the sprawling estate. The actor admitted that the costs associated with mortgage payments and his sons' education at times necessitated taking on roles he was less passionate about to ensure financial stability. "You make the commitment because you need the money, then you show up on time and do good work," he stated.
Brosnan and Smith acquired two adjacent Broad Beach properties in 2000 for $7.35 million, combining them into their Southeast Asian-inspired estate. The compound, spread over more than an acre, reportedly includes two residences with a total of five bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. The main structure, known as the "Orchid House," spans nearly 12,500 square feet and took over a decade to complete. It features amenities such as a movie theater, gym, music room, spa, and a climate-controlled wine cellar capable of holding approximately 200 bottles.
The couple has previously explored options for the property, including a $120,000-per-month rental and a listing for sale that was later withdrawn in 2021. While they have divided their time between Malibu and Kauai, Hawaii, Brosnan indicated that his heart increasingly lies with the islands, stating, "home is very much here in the islands."
