San Francisco-based Philz Coffee will sponsor the city's annual Pride Parade with a $30,000 contribution, a significant commitment that comes after the company reversed a decision to remove Pride flags from its cafes.

This marks Philz Coffee's return as a sponsor for the event, having not sponsored since 2018. The decision to sponsor follows backlash and internal revolt when the company initially planned to remove rainbow flags from its locations earlier in the year. The company stated the original plan was aimed at standardizing store appearances.

Philz CEO Mahesh Sadarangani issued an apology for the initial decision, stating, "I made a mistake, and I am sincerely sorry." The company subsequently reversed course, deciding to retain the flags in response to employee and public sentiment.

Suzanne Ford, Executive Director of San Francisco Pride, indicated she played a role in bringing the flag removal plans to light. "It was like, OK, we see that you’re addressing the harm you caused, you’re reversing your decision. Would you like to deepen this relationship, and would you like to support San Francisco Pride?" Ford told The San Francisco Standard. "I’m really, I’m very grateful that they did."

Sadarangani also discussed the controversy at an LGBTQ forum, noting plans to incorporate the Progress Pride flag into a "community wall" within his stores. He highlighted the significant number of LGBTQ employees at Philz and the company's ongoing support for community initiatives.

The increased sponsorship occurs as many Pride events nationwide face a reduction in corporate partnerships, a trend some have linked to a more aggressive stance against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies. Major companies like Starbucks are not returning as sponsors for the San Francisco parade this year, and tech giants such as Meta and Google have not sponsored for several years.
