At 40 years old, Rachael Sacerdoti found herself at a personal low point, weighing close to 100 kilograms. Facing physical discomfort and a lack of energy, she was concerned about her ability to engage in activities with her three young children. Having previously struggled with diets that felt unsustainable, Sacerdoti committed to making gradual, lasting changes to her lifestyle.

Her transformation began with small steps. Initially, she started with short walks around her block, gradually increasing the duration and distance. This was followed by incorporating 20-minute home workouts five days a week, using light dumbbells for strength training. These consistent, manageable efforts led to a significant shift, with over 30 kilograms lost within six months.

Shifting Dietary Habits

Sacerdoti's approach to nutrition focused on balance rather than restriction. She identified protein as a key component in her meals, ensuring it was present in every eating occasion to promote satiety and reduce cravings. High-protein breakfasts, such as protein shakes or eggs with cottage cheese, became a cornerstone of her routine, helping to stabilize blood sugar and maintain energy levels until lunch.

She also made strategic changes to her shopping habits, avoiding the snack aisle entirely. Instead, she focused on stocking her kitchen with nutrient-dense foods like frozen fruits, Greek yogurt, eggs, and vegetables. A planned snack around 4 p.m. with options like Greek yogurt or boiled eggs was implemented to prevent overeating at dinner.

Integrating Exercise and Mindset

Strength training became a pivotal element in her fitness journey, contributing to body reshaping and muscle development. While cardio initially aided in weight loss, Sacerdoti now dedicates 45-60 minutes per session to working all major muscle groups. She emphasizes consistency in her exercise routine, even incorporating brief sessions on busy days. Cardio workouts are kept simple and consistent, typically involving 20-30 minutes of incline walking, rowing, or cycling.

Hydration was another crucial habit to cultivate, with Sacerdoti aiming for 2-3 liters of water daily, carrying a water bottle with her to ensure steady intake. Prioritizing 7-8 hours of sleep per night was also integrated into her plan, setting a consistent bedtime to manage stress and improve recovery.

The most significant change, however, was a mental one. Sacerdoti moved away from seeking extremes or perfection, abandoning the concept of 'cheat days' and refraining from self-punishment after occasional indulgences. This shift in mindset allowed her to maintain her habits consistently, even amidst life's inevitable challenges.

Now 46, Sacerdoti reports feeling stronger, more confident, and in control of her health. She can actively participate in activities with her children and feels empowered by her transformation, which she attributes to consistent, sustainable changes rather than perfection.
