As the use of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound for weight loss continues to grow globally, a new challenge is emerging for many users: how to maintain their weight once they stop taking the drugs. This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as the "Ozempic cliff," is prompting the development of specialized support programs, including those offered by personal trainers.
Research indicates that a significant portion of individuals discontinue GLP-1 therapy within a year, with some studies reporting discontinuation rates between 50% and 75%. Following cessation, weight regain is common. A meta-analysis from the University of Oxford found that patients who stopped GLP-1 therapy regained weight at a rate of approximately 0.4 kg per month, returning to their baseline weight within about 1.7 years.
Recognizing this trend, organizations like the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) are introducing training programs designed to equip personal trainers to assist clients before, during, and after their use of weight-loss medications. According to Gallup data, the percentage of U.S. adults taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss rose from 3% in early 2024 to 11% in 2026.
The NASM curriculum focuses on two key evidence-based approaches for long-term weight management post-GLP-1 use: behavior change and resistance training. These methods aim not only to prevent weight regain but also to build muscle mass. The Mayo Clinic notes that while some loss of lean mass can occur during GLP-1 therapy, consistent resistance training and adequate protein intake are crucial for preserving and rebuilding muscle. NASM-certified trainers are being trained to guide clients in these areas.
The need for such specialized training is evident. A recent NASM report indicated that 73% of personal trainers have been asked by clients about GLP-1 medications, highlighting a demand for preparedness within the fitness industry.
NASM's new course, "Understanding Weight Loss Medications," offers training materials and certification to help fitness professionals support clients in maintaining their weight loss achievements and developing sustainable healthy habits after discontinuing GLP-1 treatments.
