Firefighters in Rostraver Township, Pennsylvania, successfully rescued a raccoon from a storm drain by employing the 'jaws of life,' a powerful hydraulic tool commonly used in vehicle extrications. The unusual rescue operation took place after initial attempts by a local resident to free the animal using water and dish soap proved unsuccessful.
Upon arrival, the fire crew removed the storm grate with the raccoon still inside. They then carefully used the 'jaws of life' to cut away a portion of the metal grate, creating enough space to release the trapped animal. The Rostraver Township Fire Department confirmed that the raccoon was freed and returned to its natural habitat. The animal was later observed heading back into nearby trees.
One of the responding firefighters described the rescue as "one for the record books," acknowledging the unique application of the rescue equipment. Social media users also reacted to the incident, with many expressing gratitude for the firefighters' efforts and commending the novel use of the rescue tools.
