Senator John Fetterman is facing significant backlash from fellow Pennsylvania Democrats following a report that details alleged instances of neglecting core senatorial duties. The report, citing leaked text messages between Fetterman and his aides, suggests the senator was unwilling to engage in certain responsibilities, such as meeting with constituents and attending significant events.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Fetterman's office indicated his disinterest in meetings concerning issues like Medicaid cuts with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, with the senator reportedly believing the representatives "just want free trips to D.C." In another instance, Fetterman allegedly considered a funeral for slain police officers a "nonstarter" due to its expected three-hour duration and dress code requirements.
These accounts have drawn strong rebukes from Pennsylvania representatives. Rep. Chris Deluzio, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, stated on X that Fetterman's "pathetic behavior as a senator" demonstrates "laziness, disrespect, and willingness to carry water for a foreign government," adding that "this man has no sense of duty." Deluzio further suggested that "we in Pennsylvania will do something about it in 2028."
Rep. Brendan Boyle, also a Democrat from Pennsylvania, called Fetterman a "disgrace" on X, asserting that the state "deserves better than a lazy trust fund baby who is too lazy to do the job."
Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, who also serves as the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, echoed these sentiments on X, describing the report as "horrifying, but not new to many of us in PA." Kenyatta stated that Fetterman "barely showed up as [Lieutenant Governor] and is constantly MIA as our senator," and that "2028 can’t come soon enough."
Since taking office, Fetterman has occasionally diverged from party lines. He joined Republicans in opposing the renewal of lapsing Obamacare tax credits during a government shutdown dispute, has been a vocal supporter of Israel, and confirmed some Trump administration nominees. His political stances have been seen by some as more moderate than his progressive platform during his 2022 Senate campaign against Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Fetterman has previously stated he has "no intentions of joining the Republican Party" when asked about speculation regarding his political alignment.
