Peak, the restaurant situated on the 101st floor of 30 Hudson Yards, has undergone a significant transformation and is now recognized as a leading destination for dining with a view in New York City. Following a redesign and a change in management to Tao Group, the establishment reopened as Peak With Priceless in late May, aiming to capture the grandeur of the former Windows on the World.
Nighttime reservations for tables with window views are in high demand, and the vibrant atmosphere from the adjacent Avenue Sky Lounge, a revival of a notable West Chelsea nightlife spot, contributes to the dining floor's energetic ambiance.
While no venue can fully replicate the legacy of Windows on the World, which was a prominent celebration venue before its destruction on 9/11, Peak offers distinct advantages. Its expansive windows provide a broader appreciation of the cityscape, an uptown location, and consistently improved cuisine. Additionally, diners receive complimentary access to the 100th-floor outdoor observation deck, Edge, which typically has a per-person entry fee.
Under Tao Group's operation, which also manages popular venues like Tao and Beauty & Essex, Peak maintains a more traditional restaurant setting, eschewing the excessive party atmosphere often associated with its sister establishments. The restaurant features a curated rock and disco soundtrack. General manager Francesco Fazzari and a significant portion of the original staff have returned, ensuring a sense of continuity.
The interior, originally designed by David Rockwell, was refined by Susan Nugraha of Tao Group and iCrave. The updated decor includes velvet draperies and seating in blue and grey hues, creating a softer aesthetic. Table arrangements have been optimized to enhance skyline views from every seat, and the bar has been relocated from the windows to the center of the room.
Culinary Revitalization
The menu, overseen by Tao Group's chief culinary officer Ralph Scamardella, features prix-fixe and a la carte options for modern American cuisine. Appetizers range from $24 to $37, with entrees typically priced between $38 and $95, and desserts from $18 to $27. Window tables are exclusively offered as a three-course prix-fixe menu, priced at $95 for lunch and $145 for dinner.
Dishes such as steamed black sea bass in a tomato water broth with olives and chili, and Maine lobster served over sautéed spinach, highlight the kitchen's capabilities. The filet au poivre, coated in cracked peppercorns and served with mushroom duxelles, is prepared to a precise medium-rare-plus.
A standout dessert is the 'Skyline,' a pyramid-shaped creation featuring hazelnut mousse, salted caramel, and dark chocolate spray.
Enhanced Experience with Edge
Beyond the dining, Peak offers patrons free admission to the Edge observation deck. This popular attraction has introduced seven new 'immersive experiences,' including light shows themed around the city. One such experience, 'Reflections,' utilizes mirrored surfaces, while 'Kaleidoscope' employs lens effects to create fragmented images of visitors.
These combined elements at Peak aim to provide a comprehensive experience that celebrates New York City.
