Free agent pass rusher Za'Darius Smith has refuted reports suggesting he was on the verge of signing with the Cleveland Browns. Instead, Smith worked out for the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, according to league transaction trackers.

The reports of Smith heading to Cleveland had circulated over the weekend, with some outlets indicating a signing could be finalized as early as Monday. However, Smith himself took to social media to address the claims, stating, "I haven't signed yet. I have another workout tomorrow morning with a different team! Who told you to post this?"

Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl selection with 70.5 career sacks, has a history with both franchises. He played for the Browns for two seasons, appearing in 25 games and recording 10 sacks and 27 quarterback hits. He also has a connection with new Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski, who previously coached Smith during their time together with the Browns before Stefanski was fired by Cleveland.

Falcons' Pass Rush Needs

The Falcons appear to have a pressing need for pass rush help. Two of their first-round draft picks at the position may not be available to start the NFL season. Jalon Walker reportedly tore his ACL during training camp and will miss the season, while James Pearce faces an eight-game suspension under the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy.

This situation creates an intriguing free agency battle, with both the Browns and the Falcons vying for Smith's services. The development also raises questions about Smith's potential motivations given his history with both the Browns organization and Stefanski.

When asked about Smith on Monday, Browns coach Todd Monken deferred comment, directing inquiries to general manager Andrew Berry. "I’m not going to comment on that. I really don’t know where it’s at, so I’ll leave that to Andrew," Monken said.
