A Paris official has attributed the record-breaking heat wave in Europe, which has caused over 1,300 deaths, in part to American energy consumption, particularly the widespread use of air conditioning.
Audrey Pulvar, deputy mayor of Paris for international relations, responded on social media to American tourists and influencers who criticized France for its limited air conditioning. She stated that as the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions, the U.S. bears significant responsibility for global warming and its consequences.
"Your cities, which are 90 per cent air conditioned, are not unrelated to this," Pulvar wrote, urging Americans to "do your part."
The remarks come as Europe experiences extreme temperatures, with Paris reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat wave has strained power grids and led to a significant increase in mortality across the continent.
