A mother and father have been charged in connection with the death of their one-year-old son, who died from severe malnutrition, and the neglect of a second child. Adam Johnson, 26, and Kylie Smith, 25, both of St. Helens, were arrested and subsequently charged.
Authorities were alerted when Maero Johnson was rushed to a hospital. Despite efforts by medical staff, the one-year-old died on August 23, 2023. A postmortem examination confirmed the cause of death as ketonic hypoglycaemia and severe malnutrition. During the investigation, Merseyside Police officers found a second child in the home to be neglected and underdeveloped.
In addition to charges related to the death and neglect of the children, both Johnson and Smith face a charge of possession of a Class B drug, identified as cannabis.
The couple is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on August 13.
