The San Diego Padres have signed pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. to a minor league deal, adding depth to their bullpen. Honeywell previously emerged as a key contributor for the Los Angeles Dodgers during their 2024 postseason run, notably in the World Series.
Honeywell's role in the 2024 World Series Game 4 involved pitching to preserve the availability of other bullpen arms. Although he allowed five runs in the eighth inning, his effort allowed the Dodgers to utilize their main relievers in Game 5, which they won to secure the championship. He also performed a similar function in the NL Championship Series against the New York Mets.
During the 2024 season, the Dodgers claimed Honeywell off waivers in July. He appeared in 18 regular-season games for Los Angeles, posting a 2.62 ERA over 34.1 innings. The Dodgers' bullpen was known as the "Bullpen Dawgs" during this period.
This move marks a new chapter for the 31-year-old pitcher, who will now be with one of the Dodgers' main rivals. Honeywell previously played for the Padres in 2023, appearing in 36 games and recording a 4.05 ERA across 46.2 innings.
Since his World Series appearance, Honeywell has not returned to the major league level. He was with the San Francisco Giants earlier this year on a minor league contract but was released before the season began. His minor league deal with the Padres offers another opportunity to reach the majors, aligning with the Padres' history of acquiring players on reclamation projects.
