The San Diego Padres finalized a trade for right-handed pitcher Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers at the precise moment the Major League Baseball trade deadline passed. The Padres also acquired third-baseman Gage Workman in the deal.
In exchange for Mize and Workman, San Diego sent left-handed pitcher Kash Mayfield, their second-overall prospect, and Jackson Wolf to Detroit. Mize is currently in the midst of his most successful MLB season, boasting a 2.70 earned run average and 85 strikeouts across 16 starts and 86.2 innings pitched.
Mize, the first overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, has shown significant progress in his major league career and is expected to strengthen the Padres' pitching staff for the remainder of the season. He joins a Padres rotation that recently added left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants.
The Padres' move comes shortly after the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Tigers over the weekend. While Mize is not considered to be at Skubal's elite level, his acquisition along with Ray's, is intended to improve San Diego's rotation as they compete for a postseason berth.
