Oti Mabuse, a professional dancer, has offered her perspective on fellow dancer AJ Pritchard's participation in "Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro," a U.S. competition. Mabuse suggested that Pritchard's personality might be "more palatable" to an American audience, contrasting it with his reception during his time on the British show "Strictly Come Dancing."
Mabuse characterized Pritchard as "controversial," noting that his public statements, particularly those advocating for more British professional dancers on the BBC's "Strictly," may have alienated some viewers. She pointed to the popularity of non-British professional dancers on "Strictly" such as Aljaz, Giovanni, and Janette, as well as Vito, Nikita, Alexis, and Katya, and historically Vincent Simone, Ola Jordan, Kristina Rihanoff, and Natalie Lowe, arguing that Pritchard's stance could have been perceived negatively by many.
"He left, and he decided, okay, maybe now I've matured, I've grown, and I'd like another opportunity," Mabuse stated. "Do I think he should now try to go for the American one? Yeah, maybe that one might work out better for him. Maybe his personality might be a little bit more palatable there."
Despite these observations, Mabuse emphasized that she supports individuals pursuing their aspirations and does not believe people should be discouraged from achieving their goals. She noted that Shirley Ballas, head judge on "Strictly," and her son Mark, a competitor on "Dancing with the Stars," are involved in the U.S. show, adding that Shirley Ballas has a long-standing relationship with Pritchard as one of his early dance instructors.
Mabuse also spoke about the significance of "Dancing with the Stars" in the U.S., referring to it as the "mothership" of the franchise globally, implying its influence on professional dancers worldwide. She concluded by wishing Pritchard success in the competition, contingent on his ability to connect with fellow contestants and professionals, but ultimately expressing genuine support for his endeavor.
There have been prior indications of a strained relationship between Mabuse and Pritchard during their time on "Strictly Come Dancing," which Mabuse's recent comments may reflect.
