Hundreds of travelers arriving at Orlando International Airport (MCO) from London on Saturday night were subjected to lengthy delays and were allegedly instructed that they could not leave the premises without their checked baggage. Approximately 800 passengers from three Virgin Atlantic flights originating at Heathrow Airport experienced delays of up to five and a half hours.
The disruptions were attributed to adverse weather conditions that impacted ground-handling operations for the affected flights. A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic stated that the airline apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that all customers were eventually reunited with their luggage before departing the airport.
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requires all arriving passengers to clear customs and immigration. CBP can hold baggage if passengers have not completed this process and has jurisdiction over enforcement operations at MCO. A CBP spokesperson clarified that while officers were prepared to process travelers, the timely delivery of baggage to the international arrivals hall is the responsibility of the airline.
Passengers reported being repeatedly told by airport and airline staff that they were prohibited from leaving the customs area without their bags. Carol Wick, one passenger, recounted waiting for five and a half hours and being told she could not leave. She attempted to file a lost baggage claim two hours into the wait but was informed her bags were not lost and she could not depart without them. Wick estimated that around 800 passengers were warned of potential arrest if they left without their luggage.
However, Angela Starke, a spokesperson for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, denied that any passengers were threatened with arrest. Starke expressed the authority's frustration and stated that they are working with airline partners to understand the incident and prevent future occurrences unrelated to weather.
Another passenger, Jessica Watkins, described the lack of communication from staff regarding the reasons for the extended delays and the timeline for resolution. Passengers on her flight noted that other flights from different European cities and Brazil were processed and cleared more quickly. Following the ordeal, Virgin Atlantic sent an email to affected passengers offering reimbursement for snack purchases, which some passengers found to be an inadequate response given the lack of available food during the wait.
