Oprah Winfrey has publicly distanced herself from Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz, two television personalities she helped launch to national fame. Winfrey stated that the political affiliations and views of McGraw and Oz have no connection to her, emphasizing that their individual life paths are separate from her own.

Winfrey explained her initial decision to give breaks to both McGraw and Oz. She recalled McGraw's practical support during a difficult six-week trial in the late 1990s, believing his approach could help many people. Similarly, she recognized Oz's ability to explain complex medical topics, such as colon cancer, in an accessible way that she found meaningful and potentially beneficial to a wider audience.

Recent years have seen both McGraw and Oz become more prominent figures in conservative politics. Dr. Mehmet Oz, who received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania in 2022 but was ultimately defeated by incumbent Senator John Fetterman. Dr. Phil McGraw, while not affiliated with a specific party, appeared at a Trump campaign rally in October 2024 and participated in immigration-related events with former Trump border czar Tom Homan.

In her comments to Emmy Magazine, Winfrey concluded, "Everybody has their own path in life, and it has not one thing to do with me, and I don’t have one thing to do with them." She reiterated that her original intention in supporting them was based on the valuable information she believed they possessed.

Some media observers have commented on Winfrey's own engagement with political and progressive causes. However, Winfrey's statement clarifies her stance regarding her past association with McGraw and Oz, framing their current public personas as separate from her own.
