OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney's defense team is preparing to argue for self-defense and battered spouse syndrome in her upcoming murder trial. In new court filings, her lawyers are requesting that a Miami-Dade judge allow them to present evidence of her deceased boyfriend Christian Obumseli's 2020 arrest in Austin, Texas, for animal cruelty.
This motion aims to counter the prosecution's narrative by potentially introducing Obumseli's past conduct if prosecutors characterize him as nonviolent. The defense's filing includes details from an arrest warrant that accused Obumseli of cruelty to a nonlivestock animal. According to the defense, the warrant's supporting documents describe the discovery of Obumseli's dog, Halo, deceased in a kennel without water, though food was present. A veterinary pathologist reportedly concluded dehydration was the most likely cause of death. The defense asserts Obumseli provided inconsistent accounts regarding the dog's death.
Dispute Over Elevator Video Evidence
The defense is also challenging the prosecution's use of a February 2022 elevator video, which they claim unfairly depicts Clenney as the aggressor. Clenney's lawyers argue that the state is presenting an incomplete segment of the footage. They contend that earlier parts of the video show Clenney entering the elevator alone, partially clothed, barefoot, and without personal belongings. The defense alleges Obumseli later entered the elevator, wiped blood from the floor with his foot, and followed Clenney. According to the defense's account, Clenney repeatedly pressed elevator buttons in an attempt to prevent Obumseli from entering fully, but he eventually followed her inside. The filing states Obumseli then appeared to put Clenney in a headlock while attempting to operate the elevator and gain access to their apartment.
Clenney's attorneys claim she struck Obumseli during this struggle as a means of self-defense. Prosecutors, however, dispute this, citing the Miami-Dade medical examiner's findings that the fatal stab wound was inconsistent with Clenney's version of events.
Clenney was arrested four months after Obumseli's death at a rehabilitation facility in Hawaii and charged with second-degree murder. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
