One year after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, his organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA) continues its mission, with spokesman Andrew Kolvet reflecting on Kirk's unlikely rise and profound influence on the conservative movement. Kolvet, who worked alongside Kirk for eight years, detailed Kirk's journey from a young, energetic conservative activist to the founder of a significant youth organization.
Kolvet first met Kirk in 2017, noting his commanding presence and sharp intellect. Kirk, described as a multitasker with a Midwestern disdain for trends, possessed a unique ability to connect with people while remaining keenly aware of his surroundings. Kolvet was struck by Kirk's directness and willingness to forgo superficialities for substantive discussion, a trait that defined their subsequent collaboration.
Their partnership officially began with the launch of "The Charlie Kirk Show" in 2019, initially conceived as a weekly podcast. However, Kirk's boundless energy quickly expanded the show's reach, transforming it into a nationally syndicated radio program and eventually a television show. Kolvet characterized Kirk as having "highest agency," a rare virtue characterized by exceptional follow-through.
Kirk's success was built on overcoming numerous obstacles. He founded TPUSA at 18 with limited resources, aiming to engage young people in conservative principles. He later pursued his aspiration to host a radio show, mirroring his hero Rush Limbaugh, leading to the creation of "The Charlie Kirk Show." He also launched TPUSA Faith and Turning Point Action, aiming to mobilize a grassroots network for electoral impact. Kolvet highlighted that Kirk worked without a salary for the first five years of TPUSA, relying on stipends and the generosity of friends, while traveling extensively and facing near-misses with payroll.
Overcoming Adversity
Kirk's tenure was marked by significant personal and professional challenges. His dedication to travel and work took a physical toll, leading to chronic back pain that often made simple actions like walking difficult. Professionally, Kirk and TPUSA faced constant criticism and attacks. He was frequently the target of negative press, accused of being abrasive and confrontational. Following the 2020 election, he was criticized for Trump's loss among young voters and was compelled to testify before the January 6 Committee, despite not attending the event. His COO also faced legal scrutiny. Despite these pressures, Kolvet stated that each challenge only strengthened Kirk's resolve.
Expanding Influence
In the wake of the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election, Turning Point Action developed a specialized tech and data platform, "Chase the Vote," aimed at engaging low-propensity voters. This initiative reportedly transformed Arizona into a strong swing state in 2024. Furthermore, Kirk actively engaged with Gen Z on college campuses through his "Prove Me Wrong" events, which grew from small gatherings to large-scale rallies. These events, along with viral debate clips, are credited with influencing young voters' perceptions of conservatism and America, contributing to increased support for young people for Donald Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign.
Kolvet emphasized that critics often misunderstood Kirk's relentless work ethic and his commitment to building a movement brick by brick. He described Kirk as a "happy warrior" who never succumbed to despair, always willing to work harder, honor his word, and maintain an unwavering belief in American greatness. As the organization marks one year without its founder, Kolvet urged supporters to adopt Kirk's philosophy of "Never surrender" in their own struggles, carrying forward his enduring legacy.
