A man is dead and four others were injured in a stabbing spree that occurred in Oakland's Cesar Chavez Park on Monday evening. The suspect, described as a homeless man, was arrested Monday night, authorities said.
The attacks began around 7:30 p.m. and lasted for approximately 30 minutes. The victims, who appeared to be chosen at random, included one man and four women. The deceased victim has been identified as 58-year-old Gonzalo Lopez. At least two of the victims were also homeless.
Police are still investigating the motive behind the assaults. Detectives noted that the department has not encountered a multi-victim assault of this nature in recent years. Authorities believe the arrested suspect acted alone in all five attacks.
