An Oklahoma man has been arrested after allegedly firing a homemade flamethrower at deputies attempting to serve him an eviction notice.
Darron Dunn, 61, was taken into custody on August 11 after officers forced their way into his barricaded Oklahoma City apartment. Bodycam footage captured a fireball erupting from the bedroom, with flames shooting approximately 15 feet toward an officer.
Deputies arrived at Dunn's apartment to serve the eviction order, but he refused to surrender the unit. Housing authority staff subsequently unlocked the door, which had been barricaded from the inside. As officers entered, Dunn was seen spraying an aerosol can while holding a lighter, creating the flamethrower.
"Back out! Back out! Back out!" officers are heard shouting in the footage as they retreated.
During the confrontation, officers noticed a car battery wired to a device near the front door and alerted each other to the potential danger. The apartment was found to contain what police described as a makeshift explosive device, consisting of a car battery connected by wires to a device near the front door, along with several aerosol cans taped together and strung with wires.
The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office's Tactical Team and Bomb Squad were called to the scene and safely disabled the device.
No injuries were reported during the incident. Dunn was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, possession of an incendiary device or explosives, and obstructing an officer. He was taken to a Veterans Affairs hospital for medical issues and stress before being transferred to a psychiatric facility. The reason for the eviction order remains unclear.
