A wedding celebration in Westlake, Ohio, devolved into chaos and violence on Friday evening when individuals allegedly crashed the reception and initiated a brawl between two families with a history of animosity.

The incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. at the La Centre Banquet Facility, according to reports. An alleged victim told authorities that four brothers attacked guests on the dance floor. During the altercation, one of the suspects, identified as Raed Mahmoud Sulaiman, 46, reportedly armed himself with a butter knife from a place setting and began threatening attendees.

Westlake Police Captain Jerry Vogel stated that independent witnesses reported seeing injured and bloody individuals. In the midst of the melee, one guest reportedly picked up a chair and threw it toward the suspect with the butter knife.

Dozens of panicked guests fled the banquet hall into the parking lot, where arriving police officers encountered at least 40 individuals. Officials indicated that the disruption was caused by two families known to be hostile toward each other, though the exact nature of their relationship or the specific cause of the conflict at the wedding was not immediately clear.

"People who don’t normally get together and have hostilities against each other got together for whatever reason," Vogel explained. "In this case, it was somebody’s wedding. I don’t know all the relationships that were involved but when they got together, everything came back to the surface."

Raed Mahmoud Sulaiman was arrested and charged with assault, inducing panic, and tampering with evidence. He allegedly discarded the butter knife before police arrived. Vogel described the suspect wielding the butter knife as "one step further" in escalating the violence.

Two other individuals were also charged. Ali Wahdan, 47, faces charges for violating a court order that protected certain family members attending the wedding. Abdallah Wahdan, 48, is accused of threatening guests and was charged with aggravated menacing.

Police urged individuals to refrain from disrupting such events. "Don’t spoil someone else’s wedding," Vogel cautioned. "Now those people are unfortunately always going to be remembered as the wedding where there was a melee and fights involved. They’re not going to remember the good parts of it. They’re going to remember the bad parts."
