An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper is being recognized for his actions after rescuing a puppy abandoned in a cage along Interstate 71 in Medina County. Trooper John Kronander discovered the animal during a routine check of a rest area parking lot on August 23.
Body camera footage from Kronander showed the puppy in a cage with a piece of cardboard covering it, without access to food or water. After the rescue, the puppy appeared energetic and interacted playfully with the trooper before being placed in his patrol car. Kronander provided the puppy with water and then transported it to the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
The Ohio State Highway Patrol credited Kronander's "quick action and compassion" for the puppy's safe transport. Officials at the Medina County SPCA described the abandonment as "heartbreaking" and "completely unacceptable," highlighting the significant risk the animal faced.
The SPCA initially named the puppy Miles. However, a Medina County Sheriff's Office Deputy, Matthew Denton, who is a friend of Trooper Kronander, ended up adopting the dog over the weekend. Denton renamed the puppy Trooper in honor of the officer who rescued him.
"We had thrown out about five different names, and I had read some of the news articles and everyone said name it Trooper," Denton told reporters. The Medina County Sheriff's Office shared the news on Facebook, thanking Denton and his family for providing Trooper with a permanent home.
Footage of the rescue has garnered significant attention online, with over 82,000 reactions, nearly 2 million views, and thousands of comments on social media platforms. Many viewers expressed support and noted the special connection between the rescuer and the adopting family.
Deputy Denton reported that Trooper has adjusted well to his new home and has gotten along with the family's other dogs. The Medina County SPCA expressed happiness for the puppy's "happy ending."
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the abandonment. The Medina County SPCA noted that animal abandonment is a crime in Ohio, potentially leading to misdemeanor charges depending on the details of the case. The organization frequently handles cases involving animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment.
