Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur is receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries following a car accident in Toledo on Sunday morning, her office confirmed.

Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle traveling to a church service when it was struck, according to a statement from her office. The statement added that she is "active, alert" and anticipates returning to her full schedule soon.

The House of Representatives is currently in its summer recess, meaning Kaptur was not scheduled to be in Washington this week.

Kaptur, who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in House history, is engaged in a closely watched rematch for her seat against former state Rep. Derek Merrin. In the 2024 election, she secured a narrow victory by a margin just over 0.5%, which would have triggered an automatic recount had it been smaller. A libertarian candidate garnered approximately 4% of the vote in that election.

First responders from the Toledo police and fire departments were promptly on the scene. Medical professionals provided care to those involved in the crash, Kaptur's office stated. The office also indicated that they await further information from the Toledo Police Department as it investigates the incident. The Toledo Police Department’s traffic division has not yet responded to a request for comment.
