A police officer sustained a head injury and required hospital treatment after being struck with his own baton during a stop and search in Birmingham. The incident occurred on Soho Road in Handsworth on Friday, and the suspect, Mahroy Stephenson, 30, subsequently fled the scene on an e-bike.
Video footage from the incident shows two West Midlands Police officers attempting to detain a man, who is described as wearing a black hoodie and clinging to railings. As officers tried to subdue the man, who was reportedly resisting arrest, one officer warned of the potential use of a Taser. During the struggle, one officer's baton fell loose. The suspect then grabbed the baton and struck one of the officers.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital and has since been discharged. The other officer was uninjured. The suspect then mounted a high-powered e-bike and escaped.
Mahroy Stephenson is wanted by police on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent related to this incident. He is also sought in connection with an assault that occurred on June 21.
West Midlands Police are investigating the incident and have appealed for information regarding Stephenson's whereabouts. Stephenson is from the Bartley Green area of Birmingham.
