The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are adopting starkly different strategies for their journey to Melbourne for the NFL's first regular-season game in Australia, but oddsmakers are not adjusting the betting lines based on these contrasting travel plans.

The 49ers arrived in Australia nearly a week before the Sept. 11, 2026, season opener, allowing their players ample time to adjust to the nearly 16-hour flight and a 17-hour time difference from California. This decision was influenced by feedback from an advance group, who reported feeling disoriented for three days after arriving. "So it became clear to us in our mind that the best logistics for this trip was to put our players in the best position for success," said San Francisco general manager John Lynch.

In contrast, the Rams are opting for a strategy to minimize disruption to their body clocks. They are scheduled to land in Melbourne approximately 24 hours before kickoff, aiming to bypass the worst effects of jet lag by staying closer to their usual rhythm and routine. "There’s different approaches and theories, but I do have a lot of trust in our group and we’ll see," stated Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Despite these divergent approaches, sportsbooks have not altered the betting line, with the Rams consistently favored by 3.5 points since early summer. Tyler Gour, a football trader at Fanatics Sportsbook, indicated that his firm has assigned "zero value" to the travel debate, trusting that modern sports science and dedicated teams within each organization can mitigate potential disadvantages. "Because of that, we’re inclined to trust the experts here and believe that there is no major competitive disadvantage to staying in your own beds and practicing at your own facility over the 49ers’ week-long acclimation," Gour explained.

Johnny Avello, Director of Sports Operations at DraftKings, and Christian Cipollini of BetMGM Sportsbook echoed this sentiment, stating that the travel plans have no impact on their operations. BetMGM noted, "The travel plans by each team have no impact on the game from a trading perspective."

This historic matchup marks the NFL's first regular-season game in Australia, the longest journey an NFL team has undertaken for a regular-season game. With little precedent for how such travel might affect teams employing opposite strategies, oddsmakers are essentially waiting to see how the situation unfolds. "This is such a new experience for all involved, including the sportsbooks," Gour commented. "In situations like this, the market has the opportunity to speak for itself and move the point spread one way or the other, but that simply hasn’t happened."

Some anticipate that the true impact of these travel strategies might not be evident until Week 2, when the teams play their subsequent games after returning home. Joey Feazel, head of football at Caesars Sportsbook, suggested that the reacclimation process for their second games could reveal which approach, if any, proved more effective. "If one team picks a better strategy, we won’t know until after the game," Cipollini added. "We could adjust in the future based on the results, but we need more information."

The game is set to take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
