OCOOPA Direct, a China-based manufacturer, is recalling more than 1.5 million rechargeable hand warmers sold by Amazon and Walmart in the United States. The recall follows reports of the devices overheating, leading to 350 burn injuries and 15 fires. An 83-year-old resident of San Diego died in February from burn injuries sustained from the product.
The OCOOPA Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery hand warmers, which can be joined together magnetically and charged via a USB-C port, were sold in various colors for between $15 and $60 per pair. They were available nationwide between September 2018 and May 2026. The affected models can be identified by batch numbers UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, and H01, with the manufacturer's name OCOOPA printed on the device and packaging. The model and batch number can be found on the underside of each hand warmer.
Customers are advised to immediately stop using the hand warmers and dispose of them at a specialized facility for lithium-ion battery products. Alternatively, consumers can obtain a refund from the manufacturer by submitting a photo of the device with the word 'RECALLED' written on it in permanent marker. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall, citing potential manufacturing issues that could cause the devices to overheat and ignite.
