A New York City Department of Education paraprofessional was fatally stabbed and his friend seriously injured in a Bronx attack on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Rashaun Shettlewood, 32, was stabbed once in the chest, and his 33-year-old companion was stabbed multiple times in the torso. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Davidson and West Tremont avenues in the Morris Heights neighborhood.

Both victims were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital. Shettlewood, who lived nearby, succumbed to his injuries. The other victim was reported to be in stable condition.

Law enforcement sources indicated that the attack stemmed from a dispute, though the specific cause remained unclear. It was also uncertain if the victims knew their alleged attacker.

Police apprehended the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Jeffrey Jorge of Brooklyn, around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday. Officers found him with a knife at Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and linked him to the Bronx incident.

Jorge has been charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, and two counts each of assault and criminal possession of a weapon. His arraignment in the murder case was pending.

According to police records, Jorge has 13 prior arrests. His most recent arrest occurred in May 2022 for a stabbing incident in January of the same year. That victim, a 44-year-old man, was also stabbed at Davidson and West Tremont avenues, the same location as Wednesday's attack, and was hospitalized in stable condition.

Jorge's criminal history also includes an arrest on December 8, 2018, for allegedly menacing someone with a knife and biting an officer while resisting arrest. The outcomes of these previous cases were not immediately available.
