A resurfaced 2016 radio interview featuring New York City official Zohran Mamdani has drawn criticism on social media, with some accusing him of using a fabricated Ugandan accent while promoting his mother's Disney film, "Queen of Katwe."
Mamdani, who holds dual U.S. and Ugandan citizenship, was born in Uganda and moved to New York City at age 7. In the interview, which took place on South Africa's Kaya 959 radio station, he discussed Ugandan culture and his upbringing.
"The difference for me is I'm from Uganda, but I also grew up in New York," Mamdani said in the clip. "In New York, you go out, some guys are very hesitant to dance. You know, if they're not grinding, they're just standing. In Kampala, you will just not find that. People are all dancing. Everybody's dancing, men, women and it's fantastic that way."
The clip gained renewed attention recently, leading to a wave of commentary on social media platforms. Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt criticized the interview, posting on X (formerly Twitter), "Look at theater kid commie Mamdani running another fake accent and appropriating African culture. Communists are all frauds."
Benny Johnson, host of "The Benny Show," also commented on X, writing, "UNEARTHED: Zohran Mamdani does an obviously fake Ugandan accent while promoting a Disney movie based in Africa. How many Democrats have been caught using fake accents at this point? They're all frauds."
Other social media users and publications echoed similar sentiments. The Daily Wire posted on X, "Nobody does a fake accent better than a Democrat politician." Conservative Brief, a right-wing news website, shared the clip on X, questioning the prevalence of "fake accents" among Democrats.
"Queen of Katwe," directed by Mamdani's mother, Mira Nair, is based on the true story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi. Mamdani's contributions to the film included serving as music supervisor and third assistant director, and he had a brief on-screen appearance.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani's office for comment.
